Celebrate National Sleep Awareness Week and Improve Your Health!
Have you had a difficult time catching enough zzzzz’s lately? Did you know that sleepless nights can lead to major health problems? National Sleep Awareness Week, March 7-13, is an annual observation to bring public awarness to the importance of sleep. According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep-related problems affect 50 to 70 million Americans.
Lack of sleep not only affects your health, but it can also affect your safety. Approximately seven percent of all accidents in the United States are attributed to fatigue. In fact, sleeplessness affects the body much in the same way as drugs and alcohol. Being awake for 18 hours is equal to a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent, which is legally drunk.
So how can you improve the quality of sleep without turning to prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications? Essential oils are safe, all-natural, and have historically been used to improve the quality of sleep.
Here are some tips on how to use essential oils for better sleep:
- Add a few drops of lavender or Serenity to a spray bottle, mix with water, shake well, and spritz on pillows and bed linens
- Gently massage the bottom of feet with a few drops of lavender or Serenity before going to bed
- Diffuse lavender or Serenity in your room a few minutes before retiring for bed
- Add a few drops of lavender or Serenity to warm bath water and soak in the tub for a relaxing treat before bed

We have found lavender to be so helpful at bed time. I dab a bit of the doTerra Lavender oil on all of our pillows before we go to bed. If my kids are having a hard time going to sleep, I’ll dab a little across their foreheads. It works wonderfully!
