Hydration Help: Cleanse, Detoxify, and Refresh by Adding Essential Oils to Your Drinking Water

It is no secret that drinking water is essential to your health. Not only does it keep the body moving, it also helps the body to cleanse itself naturally by flushing out toxins.

Although most of us will agree staying hydrated is important, it can be difficult to consume the daily recommended amount (roughly 3.0 liters for men and 2.2 for women). Why? Because people are busy, and for some, water may seem boring. The sad reality is there are many people who drink soda instead of water, which can in turn lead to major health consequences, such as obesity, kidney damage, and elevated blood pressure.1

6 Reasons why water is so important for our bodies:2

1. Drinking water helps maintain the balance of body fluids.

2. Water can help control calories.

3. Water helps energize muscles.

4. Water helps keep skin looking good.

5. Water helps your kidneys.

6. Water helps maintain normal bowel function.

Without enough water, we experience dehydration3

Symptoms of dehydration can include:

  • Thirst
  • Dry skin
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Increased body temperature
  • Muscle cramping
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Darker-colored urine
  • Dry mucous membranes (mouth, nose, eyes)

Severe dehydration can also include:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Vomiting
  • Dark urine
  • Vision problems
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Kidney and liver failure

So, in order to flush out toxins and not experience any of the above side effects, it’s pretty clear we need to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. There’s more though—adding essential oils to your drinking water provides antioxidants that help support the cleansing organs and their natural processes to remove even more toxins out of your body. The result—you feel good! Citrus essential oils (lemon, lime, grapefruit, and wild orange) are some of the most preferred to add to water because of their pleasant taste. Citrus essential oils are also high in antioxidants. In a study4, lemon and grapefruit essential oils came in 4th and 5th as essential oils exhibiting high antioxidant activity (lavender was 1st).

Cleansing aside, there are many more benefits to adding essential oils to our drinking water. Citrus essential oils can also help to energize and uplift your spirits!

If you are a person who doesn’t like the taste of plain water, or are trying to cut back on soda, try making your water more appealing by adding flavor to it. Just by adding 1-2 drops of any citrus essential oil to your water will give you a wonderful flavor and help give you that extra mood and health boost. Give it a try!

Traditional properties of dōTERRA’s citrus oils:

  • Antibacterial
  • Antidepressant
  • Anti-fungal
  • Antimicrobial
  • Antioxidant
  • Antiseptic
  • Digestive
  • Disinfectant
  • Invigorating
  • Mood enhancing
  • Refreshing
  • Restorative
  • Stimulating

Tip: Make sure to use a glass bottle when drinking water with citrus essential oils. Citrus oils have compounds in them that dissolve petroleum products (also called “petro chemicals). They are perfectly safe for humans, but interact chemically with plastics and other petroleum-based in a way that breaks them down. It is definitely preferable to use glass or steel drinking vessels with oils, but plastic water bottles are fine if not reused.

Tip: Other essential oils that are enjoyable to drink with water include Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend, On Guard Protective Blend, and Zendocrine Detoxification Blend.

Tips to Help You Drink More Water:

  1. Have a glass of water with every snack and meal.
  2. Add 1-2 drops of your favorite citrus essential oil to your water for a fresh and invigorating flavor.
  3. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Their high water content will add to your hydration. About 20% of our fluid intake comes from foods.
  4. Keep a bottle of water with you in your car, at your desk, or in your bag.

  1. I’m so impressed with these oils. I find myself telling everyone I know about them. I drink lemon essential oil in my water all day long. I also love cooking with them. I mix sweet orange oil to moscipone cheese as an accompaniment to fruit as a desert.

  2. I love to put Cinnamon in a cup of hot water, I do that all day long. This time of year, the hot water, is so good, I don’t even drink Tea, or Hot Chocolate much any more. I just prefer the Cinnamon.

  3. Instead of drinking a beer or wine in the evening watching the news I make a non-alcoholic cocktale of sparkling mineral water and 3 or4 drops of Digest-zen and a few drops of stevia tincture with ice cubes. It’s refreshing, different and aides in digestion when I eat dinner.

  4. I loved this and reposted the link on my Facebook Slim & Sassy Challenge page. I have a team of 30 people and I’m trying to help with inspirational tips. This was AWESOME! Using lemon in warm water this morning to start MY day!

  5. I loved this post. I have been a huge water “pusher” for years. I am rarely sick. I am 50 years old and my body is changing but I have not had any trouble maintaining my weight. This posts and these references are excellent support. Thank you.

  6. I notice that when I put 1 drop of peppermint in a large glass of water, it is immediately refreshing and cooling!

  7. I love the oils, I wouldn’t leave water bottles in car unless chilled w/ ice. Some plastic bottles can release chemicals which can lead to cancer when heated in the sun or hot car. I work in Pathology just an FYI.

  8. After seeing with my own eyes how Lemon can ‘eat through plastic’, I’ve completely stopped putting my water and my various doTERRA oils in plastic bottles, no matter the classification. I now use metal water bottles and keep them prepared in the fridge. I randomly put Lemon in one, Wild Orange in another, Slim’n’Sassy Metabolic Blend in another, etc. With all bottles looking the same, when i reach for one, i never know which awesome flavour i’m going to get. It’s like having a ‘drink shop’ in my own house!

  9. I have suffered from chronic clinical depression since the 1980’s and also a form of narcolepsy for several years. I am here to tell you I am completely off my antidepressant and my “stay awake” medicine since I have been drinking slim and sassy 4 drops in 8 oz of water and switched to using On Guard toothpaste, as I read that flouride is in rat poison, which is in our water and regular toothpaste!

  10. Hi there! Someone in my Facebook group shared
this website with us so I came to give it a look. I’m definitely
enjoying the information. I’m bookmarking and will be tweeting this
to my followers! Wonderful blog and superb design.

  11. I love citrus oils in my water and only drink water containing them! The Glasstic Shatterproof Glass Water bottle works perfect for safely carrying your oils and water around with you anywhere in GLASS! I’ve had different ones for a few years now and I love them.
