Do You Have Thyme? Find Out Why You Need It!

Researchers at the Technological Educational Institute of Ionian Islands in Greece tested essential oils against drug-resistant staph (MRSA, aka a super-bug). Read the full article here to find out which essential oils killed almost all of the bacterium within an hour! (Okay, so the image to the left is a BIG clue.)

How to Use Thyme Essential Oil:

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris CT thymol), familiar to most as a common seasoning for cooking, produces an essential oil that has valuable cleansing and clarifying properties. It is also notable for its broad-spectrum activity for winter health. dōTERRA’s CPTG Thyme Essential Oil comes from thyme plants grown and harvested in Germany.

To apply topically, dilute thyme with dōTERRA’s fractionated coconut oil before applying.*

To diffuse, add 1-2 drops to diffuser. Can be blended with other oils as an air purifyer (lemon or Citrus Bliss are ideal). Can also be added as an ingredient to homemade cleaners for deep cleaning in the home or office.**

For internal use, dilute and add to capsule. Can also be added to foods as a seasoning (Note: Use a toothpick to swirl in the flavor, not a full drop.)

*Avoid eye contact. May cause skin sensitivity.

**Homemade eco-friendly cleaner with Thyme Essential Oil:
Fill a spray bottle with two cups water ; add 25 drops dōTERRA thyme essential oil and two teaspoons castile (natural soap). Use on hard-to-clean bathroom and kitchen surfaces.

Relaxation Tip #49: At the Dentist’s Office

Are you one of those people who gets tense and nervous the second you walk into your dentist’s office? Does the sound of the drill and the sight of needles just send you into a fit of nervousness? I understand. I’m the same way. The fear of pain makes the entire process most unpleasant.  But it doesn’t have to be this way! Relaxation Tip #49 is just for you…

Take deep breaths of Citrus and Lavender to relax before, during, and after a visit to the dentist’s office.

When University of Vienna researchers diffused the scents of orange and lavender into dentists’ offices, anxious patients reported they felt calmer. Both scents contain the chemical linalool, which seems to alter blood chemistry to lower stress.

Mention this research to your dentist and ask him/her to invest in some diffusers and calming essential oils, or add a few drops of each oil to cotton balls, place in a plastic bag, and take deep breaths while at the dentist’s office.

According to Dr. Neilson, a dentist in Utah, his patients have been more calm and relaxed since he began diffusing Citrus Bliss and Lavender essential oils in his office. Good dental health is important, so don’t let fear or nervousness keep you from visiting the dentist. Just be sure to bring along your dōTERRA essential oils!

Celebrate National Sleep Awareness Week and Improve Your Health!

Have you had a difficult time catching enough zzzzz’s lately? Did you know that sleepless nights can lead to major health problems? National Sleep Awareness Week, March 7-13, is an annual observation to bring public awarness to the importance of sleep. According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep-related problems affect 50 to 70 million Americans.

Lack of sleep not only affects your health, but it can also affect your safety. Approximately seven percent of all accidents in the United States are attributed to fatigue. In fact, sleeplessness affects the body much in the same way as drugs and alcohol. Being awake for 18 hours is equal to a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent, which is legally drunk.

So how can you improve the quality of sleep without turning to prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications? Essential oils are safe, all-natural, and have historically been used to improve the quality of sleep.

Here are some tips on how to use essential oils for better sleep:

  • Add a few drops of  lavender or Serenity to a spray bottle, mix with water, shake well, and spritz on pillows and bed  linens
  • Gently massage the bottom of feet with a few drops of lavender or Serenity before going to bed
  •  Diffuse lavender or Serenity in your room a few minutes before retiring for bed
  • Add a few drops of lavender or Serenity to warm bath water and soak in the tub for a relaxing treat before bed
    Sweet dreams!

“I have trouble going to sleep from time to time and achieving the deep sleep that is so productive to us.
Well, I was able to sleep through the night with your essential oils!  I honestly believe in doTerra’s oils!  After the first drop on my hand, I noticed how silky and smooth it felt, and the aroma was amazing!  I’m a believer!” –Shirley W.

Living Well: The Benefits of Leisure

Congratulations to the many cruise winners who are right now enjoying their week-long luxury cruise to three beautiful islands in the Western Caribbean! While they are enjoying some much-deserved R&R , I thought it would be a good time for all of us to remember how important leisure is in our lives. Yes, leisure—as in playtime, fun, relaxation. You probably feel better just thinking about it, don’t you?

Numerous studies suggest that leisure contributes to overall health and well-being. Coleman (1993) contends that leisure assists in maintaining physical and mental health by helping people resist stress induced illness, which can lead to enhanced well-being. Another study found that individuals who participated in leisure activities experienced higher work satisfaction and self-esteem, less burnout, fewer somatic complaints, and less anxiety (Melamed and Meir 1995) .

So what are your favorite types of leisure activities? Let us know by taking our poll.
