Patchouli Essential Oil
Used for centuries in perfumes and fragrances, Patchouli is one of the more aromatic essential oils. Patchouli oil has an easily recognizable rich musky-sweet fragrance and is used widely in the perfume industry.
Patchouli is a species from the genus Pogostemon a bushy herb of the mint family, with erect stems, reaching two or three feet in height and bearing small pale-pink or white flowers. The plant is native to the tropical regions of Asia but is now extensively cultivated in China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Philippines, West Africa and Vietnam.
During the 18th and 19th century silk traders from China traveling to the Middle East packed their silk cloth with dried patchouli leaves to prevent moths from laying their eggs on the cloth. Many historians speculate that this association with opulent eastern goods is why patchouli was considered by Europeans of that era to be a luxurious scent. It is said that patchouli was used in the linen chests of Queen Victoria in this way. Studies today suggest that patchouli essential oil may serve as an all-purpose insect repellent.
Patchouli essential oil is known to have a grounding, balancing effect on the emotions while providing excellent mood support. Patchouli is also widely used for wounds and tissue repair, as well as in skin care preparations for these same properties.

School and Serenity
I have a 6 year-old grandson who suffers from an anxiety and separation disorder each time school starts. When the new school year began, despite expecting problems, he did fine the first few weeks. However, things quickly changed and his anxiety increased each time he was taken to school. He was very verbal about his desire not to go to school and he would cause a scene when he was made to go. When I heard about his troubles I almost found myself in tears; someone so young should be enjoying school.
Hoping to help I took my grandson to Mandy Johnson to receive reflexology. While he was there he was introduced to Serenity essential oil. He loved the smell of it. On the way to the car he asked if I would take him again sometime and allow him to smell those bottles. Mandy had given us a sample of Serenity, so I had my grandson spray it on his pillow and rub it on his feet before going to bed. The next morning, although not excited, my grandson climbed out of the car, said goodbye, and ran into the school. He has not complained about attending since.
My grandson now loves to attend dōTERRA meetings. He loves the chance he has to smell all the different essential oils. Every time I see him now he has a hold of a bottle of essential oil smelling it. I am so grateful to have found dōTERRA.

The Decision to Quit Smoking
I made the decision to quit smoking on November 17, 2010. As a 31 year-old and an Independent Product Consultant for dōTERRA, I felt it was time and the right choice. The oils, I believed, would help me quit smoking. Each time I had the urge to smoke, and it happened a lot, I put a drop of Clove and a drop of On Guard essential oil directly on my tongue. I continued doing this for a week. Then I chose to use only OnGuard. Today, approximately one month after I chose to quit smoking, I use OnGuard throat drops whenever I have the urge to smoke. These urges have drastically decreased from when I first began, and I have not had a cigarette since November 17, 2010.
Smokers may be aware that the other difficulty faced is your temper. When a smoker misses their cigarette, they can become easily irritated and moody. In my home we have a dōTERRA diffuser, and in that diffuser I place Lavender and Serenity. It has been a great lift to my spirits and allows me to relax. I believe that my diffuser saved me from sleepless nights as I began my journey to become smoke free. I highly recommend it to others who are trying to quit smoking.

‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE A dōTERRA CHRISTMAS
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
All the creatures were stirring, even Squeaky the mouse;
So I got out the peppermint and sprayed everywhere,
Even on the stockings, which were hung with such care.
When I noticed the dust on the mantle, oh no!
I got out the Lemon and cleaned high and low.
Now Santa can come, we’re ready you see,
We use dōTERRA products to keep us germ free.
Our children were nestled all snug in their beds,
On Guard on their feet and lavender on their heads.
Pa was sleeping without even a care,
He had used SanoBella shampoo on his thinning hair.
When up on the roof I heard such a clatter,
I knew Santa arrived at 100 pounds fatter.
I grabbed up the cookies, in the garbage they went.
Good thing I had thrown them, they left quite a dent.
I replaced the hot cocoa with Slim & Sassy cider,
Hoping Santa would drink it and get a lot lighter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
Yep, the reindeer were out there all huffing and wheezing,
I grabbed a bottle of Breathe before they started sneezing.
Turned up the diffuser to get Breathe in the air,
Hoping the reindeer would inhale a good share.
Now what in the world can I do for St. Nick?
AromaTouch Therapy – the perfect trick.
I’ll clear up his aches, his hurts and his pains,
Then use Helichrysum for his varicose veins.
As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nickolas came with a bound.
Out came the toys, the presents and all,
Even for Johnny a Jazz basketball.
His eyes – how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
The oils application was such a big hit,
Next year I will be on the top of his list.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight
“dōTERRA for all, use dōTERRA tonight!”

Mother Knows Best
I’m not a mother, but I do have nieces and nephews whom I love. I recently watched my sister’s blog as she posted time and again about my little niece and her continuing fever. The pictures of her on the couch and in her mother’s arms pulled at my heart strings. I hate watching family members suffer and each time my sister called I could hear the strain in her voice as she expressed concern for her child.
Now I’m sure all the independent product consultants out there reading this post are thinking of a long line of dōTERRA products that could have proven useful, but me being a novice, I failed to help at all. I read, listened, called to check up, prayed and sympathized, but with her in Colorado and me here, I felt my ability to help was limited. Thankfully I have a loving mother who is quick on her feet and slightly more seasoned than I happen to be.
When my sister called my mom expressing concern at her daughter’s continued high fever and listless responses, my mom simply asked what she had on hand. I had forgotten, but a week prior during my sister’s visit, I had stopped by on my way home from work with a bag of dōTERRA products. Like so many times before, I had arrived with half a dozen and had left with only my dōTERRA lemon oil. My sister had taken the Introduction to Oils kit and that’s what she had on hand.
My mother, who has always looked to alternative means for her family’s health, is quite familiar with essential oils. She recommended my sister dilute and rub peppermint oil on my niece’s chest, back, and feet. My sister called my mom the next morning expressing her surprise at the drop in her daughter’s temperature. Despite the change however, she still felt as if something was wrong. Her daughter just wasn’t herself.
My mom, who raised nine children of her own, is quite familiar with sick children and the symptoms that accompany illness. After listening carefully to my sister describe her daughter’s symptoms, including the continued listless responses, my mother exclaimed, “It’s her ears.” She suggested that my sister warm lavender oil and rub it behind and on the outside of her daughter’s ears. My sister called the next morning excited, “Mom, I have my daughter back!”
Each of my family members grew up with my mom throwing herbs, oils, and homemade tonics at our varied illnesses. I can’t begin to describe to you the taste and the textures of some of those awful concoctions. As we grew up and moved out we discovered doctors and Tylenol, but when we’re in real need it’s my mom that we turn to. She raised nine healthy children and has eight beautiful, healthy grandchildren. I have to admit there is a lot to be said for alternative means, especially dōTERRA essential oils, for your family’s health.

Destroying the Stigma of Direct Sales
How familiar are you with comments like the following, “Did you say multi level marketing? What? Seriously! You mean pyramid scheme. Aren’t those all just a giant scam?” I’ve worked the corporate side of direct sales for 11 years. I’m not an independent consultant but the stigma is the same. When I mention who I work for and the type of company it is I see the same wary look, the ticking of the internal gears, and the body language as they pose for flight. It isn’t until I add the disclaimer, “I work for corporate” that I see the person visibly relax.
It’s interesting that I feel a need for a disclaimer or that any of us, corporate or independent consultant, feel that we must apologize for what we do. During my career I’ve watched record breaking sales, millionaires made, and health improved, none of which deserve an apology. Working with consultants I’ve gained a profound respect for their tenacity and drive. However, I have never had a desire to become one – that is until dōTERRA. Now let me preface that by saying I haven’t switched sides yet but here are just a few of the reasons I would.
Culture:
Granted, I’m no expert—eleven years under my belt and I’m still learning about the direct sales world— but one thing I do know is that company culture plays an integral part in its success. Culture is the composition of the values and practices shared by the members of a group. Each member of an organization can impact culture, yet most will conform to the values and practices held by those in authority. I was hired two weeks prior to the 2010 dōTERRA convention and as you can imagine, with my prior experience, was ready for the worst. I expected executive management that praised in public and berated behind closed doors, product consultants who were demanding and demeaning to staff, and employees and consultants who only looked out for themselves or their team members. Needless to say I was surprised when I encountered the opposite. Executives, despite a rigorous schedule and being without assistants, found time to praise and aid employees. Top independent product consultants provided baskets of food for busy, hungry, employees along with their praise. Employees shared the work load while product consultants aided each other in developing the skills needed to be successful despite organization. It was refreshing and is a culture that allows and denotes success.
Product:
I’ve seen every type of direct sales company from juice, to electronics, to law services, to fitness. I have nothing negative to say about any of them; each is successful for a variety of reasons. This being said, dōTERRA has an advantage. dōTERRA is not a one product brand. Consultants and consumers are not limited to a one product order – and in my experience variety breeds curiosity. I’ve worked for dōTERRA for roughly three months and have spent over four hundred dollars in product purchases. I’m not a consultant – I have no incentive to buy the products other than my continued curiosity regarding each of the individual oils and the fact that they work (experiences I’ll have to cover in future blog posts). Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) now has meaning to me. A company that values quality, science and research, and understands the needs of their client base cannot help but be successful. I knew something was different when I discussed the oils and I had family members and friends tell me, “Watch out—if we didn’t know better we’d think you were a consultant.” Not that they’re complaining every time I bring oils to a gathering I walk away with nothing. Products that work sell themselves!
Now I know I’m probably preaching to the choir, but from one who knows the industry and has always been a bit of a skeptic forced to include a disclaimer, I want you to know I get it. I see the reason for the excitement and uncontrollable need to share – I feel it myself and these are only a few of the reasons. So I’ll agree to no more disclaimers or apologies if you do! www.doterra.com

The Face of Winter
Many of us enjoy the change in seasons and the holiday bustle that ensues. We look forward to trading in the summer sun and relaxing by the pool for the warmth of the fireplace and a mug of hot chocolate. Fluctuating from the extremes of the harsh outside weather to the indoor warmth can be an adventure. We make transitions in our apparel from light layers to thick warm layers in order to protect ourselves from the cold. We take precautions but often overlook the affects of this change in weather on our skin. These changes can cause scaly, chapped and flaky skin conditions. Protect yourself this winter with dōTERRA’s Essential Skin Care.
dōTERRA Essential Skin Care is a family of skin care products designed to maximize the natural power of essential oils in helping to keep your skin feeling and looking young, healthy, and gorgeous. In addition to a careful selection of CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils added in generous proportion to each product, the Essential Skin Care line includes cutting-edge technologies which complement the essential oils in targeting the visible signs of both cellular and mechanical aging. Contains one each of dōTERRA’s Essential Skin Care Facial Cleanser, Pore Reducing Toner, Anti-Aging Moisturizer, and Tightening Serum.
Facial Cleanser
With dōTERRA Facial Cleanser, CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils of melaleuca and peppermint gently cleanse, lifting away impurities and leaving your skin feeling clean, fresh, and smooth. Cruciferous vegetable extracts also work to inhibit skin irritation and reduce oxidative stress to skin cells.
Pore Reducing Toner
Formulated to visibly reduce the size of pores, dōTERRA Pore Reducing Toner contains CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils of lavender, ylang ylang, and german chamomile which work with cutting edge ingredients to calm sensitive skin, inhibit skin irritation, and reduce oxidative stress to skin cells.
Anti-Aging Moisturizer
Cutting-edge ingredients combine with the CPTG essential oils of lavender, jasmine, geranium, and frankincense to provide an anti-aging moisturizer that does more than moisturize and soften skin. Anti-Aging Moisturizer will target the visible signs of aging–improving skin elasticity and tone, reducing the appearance and number of wrinkles as well as helping to prevent the future signs of mechanical aging.
Tightening Serum
Featuring CPGT essential oils of frankincense, sandalwood and myrrh in generous proportion, dōTERRA Essential Skin Care Tightening Serum is scientifically formulated to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and promote skin hydration. Tightening Serum tightens and smoothes skin naturally, providing both significant short-term and long-term tightening benefits, as well as increasing skin clarity for firmer, younger appearing skin.
Invigorating Scrub
Invigorate and energize skin while exfoliating and polishing using this aromatic scrub. CPTG essential oils of grapefruit and peppermint make the exfoliating step of your beauty regimen a refreshing, aromatic experience. Jojoba and cruciferous vegetable extracts leave skin protected and smooth, while other cutting-edge ingredients work to prevent irritation and the proliferation of skin discoloration.
Tony Christensen
“My name is Tony Christensen. I am 46 years old, a father of two teenagers, and an avid ultra marathon trail runner and cyclist. My first experience with dōTERRA essential oils came just a few minutes after completing the Bear 100 in September of 2010. The Bear 100 runs from Logan to Bear Lake and is a 100 mile endurance race. After 33 hours and 45 minutes of running up and down mountain trails, there was my wife Kathy at the finish line. She was carrying several bottles of essential oils for my blistered feet and sore knees.
After managing to peel my shoes off, Kathy applied Melaleuca and Lavender essential oil to my blistered feet to aid healing. Earlier in the day, at around mile 85 in the race, I was barely able to continue. The blistering was bad and I had stopped to apply Neosporin, second-skin, and band-aids. Fortunately those helped for the remaining 15 miles but at the finish line my feet were in need of something more. In the previous 100 mile races I had entered, I had suffered from the effects of blisters, walking gingerly for nearly a week. I wanted to avoid this as much as possible.
Also, as expected, my knees were shot. I had descended from the mountains nearly 4000 feet to Bear Lake. I knew from previous experience that my problem was patellar tendonitis. I knew that this could prevent me from walking up and down stairs for days after, and I could not run. I needed to try something new. Kathy applied Deep Blue essential oil between ice applications to my knees.
Running through the night in cold mountain air also had me developing a cough. Kathy put a few drops of On Guard essential oil on my left hand and a few drops of Peppermint essential oil on my right. She had me cup my hands around my nose and mouth and take long deep breaths. This was repeated periodically. Soon the cough was gone and I was sleeping peacefully.
So how did the dōTERRA oils help me? My blisters and tendonitis, with continued application of essential oils healed. I returned to work with little ill effect on Monday, and my knees hardly bothered me at all. In fact, on Tuesday, I was headed down to Moab for a 100 mile mountain bike ride on the White Rim Trail with some college friends – to unwind. My leg muscles were still fatigued, but I barely noticed the monster blisters and sore knees I had suffered from three days earlier.
I plan on continuing to use dōTERRA oils for these ailments and others for many miles to come!”
